ARTA is the original name and building of the former chocolate and confectionery factory in Piešt'any, which operated in the interwar period. Today it is a cultural and creative centre and a project of the civic association Iniciatíva ARTA, which runs the centre.
Poor opportunities in the creative segment and the departure of young people from the city in search of jobs, cultural offerings and a better quality of life than what the city offers were the trigger for the initial proposal of the creative centre, which has been in the making since 2017. The aim of ARTY is to build a creative background in Piešt'any, to bring new formats of cultural events and contemporary art, to create space for community projects and through its activities to help develop the potential and quality of life in the city, taking into account the genius loci of the building, which since 2019 the association has been improving and renovating with the help of volunteers, its own loan and the support of the owner of the building, which is the Trnava Self-Governing Region.
The centre has been fully operational since 2022. The 3000m2 building houses (not only) creative studios, local producers, a café, but also a gallery, an event space, a freelance studio, a street gallery called Vitrínky and a large courtyard, where a cultural programme in visual arts, design, architecture, music, theatre, film and other areas is regularly organised. It is the result of grassroots civic initiative, open dialogue, sustainable design, collaboration and social engagement.
