Art Cafe

Art Cafe was officially founded in October 1998 as a spontaneous project of a group of artists who after the Velvet Revolution bought and renovated the house where it is still located today. Gradually, others joined them and the owners changed, always keeping the character of an alternative art space as a priority. It owes its existence to all the owners, operators and fans who have passed the baton in its stewardship. In October 2023 Art Cafe celebrated 25 years of operation in various guises, as a tiny café, as a "community centre", as a cultural space and, after the renovation of the summer terrace and attic, as a music club. The year 2023 was also a breakthrough for us in that we became members of the Anténa network.

You've probably been to Arta before, so you know that we have long-planned and spontaneous events, we organise large concerts and small intimate events in the garden, literary debates, staged and author readings, we host a number of festivals, we hold discussions with well-known personalities, and we give educational and scientific lectures, where we give space to local scientists and scholars. Throughout the year, we exhibit works by talented artists as selected by our curator. Since Covid we have been working with the Rockall Association of Iceland and developing other European friendships. In addition to various artistic genres, our dramaturgy focuses on the promotion of minority rights (Together Shobov festival, [fjúžn] festival, Slovak Warm House), 20th-century history (SLovO aleBO huDbA festival), events aimed at understanding democracy and respect for human rights, the fight against racism, intolerance, gender inequality and ageism. The Art Cafe building is also home to the Ensemble of Irregular Theatre, which organises the Amplión festival.
